How to score a discounted Porsche?

The lure of a deal is strong. That was proved by a brief story Automotive News ran Nov. 25 online and on Page 10 of the Nov. 28 issue. The story -- "What happens to Porsche's parked diesels?"-- revealed that Porsche Cars North America plans to eventually sell its grounded Cayenne diesels as used vehicles. It was picked up by some other outlets.

A common theme in comments on our story and the versions elsewhere: How do I buy this car? How big of a discount might I get? Some interested buyers even emailed and called the reporter who wrote the story seeking advice on tracking down one of the diesel Cayennes.

The new Cayennes have been parked on dealership lots for more than a year because of a stop-sale order stemming from Porsche parent Volkswagen AG's diesel emissions scandal. Porsche awaits regulatory approval of a repair.

"I have wanted one for years but didn't feel I should spend the money on it," one interested buyer wrote to us. The 2016 Cayenne diesel started at $63,295, including shipping.

On the other hand, some current owners of Cayenne diesels weren't as excited by the news. On Rennlist, a site for enthusiasts, some forum participants who already own Cayenne diesels lamented the plan, worrying it would trigger a big drop in the existing values of their used vehicles.
