Long content to provide navigation and music for cars, Apple has set its sights on much more with the next version of CarPlay.
Apple wants to take over the entire dashboard, including the driver information screen, which would allow it to add more functions and collect more data.
It is a direct challenge to the automakers that have spent time and money building their own driver information screen menus and layouts. Many consumers prefer CarPlay to the interfaces developed by automakers.
While nearly all new U.S. vehicles can be had with Apple CarPlay today, the latest version would require deeper information exchanges between the iPhone maker and automakers.
The next-gen CarPlay service would work on multiple screens at once and would have an instrument cluster with faces that offer different dials, themes and colors.
