Benteler Automotive Group, a key supplier of internal-combustion engine-related parts, plans to go into series production on electric drive systems over the next two years, representing a shift into new territory for the German company.
Although chassis and engine and exhaust components remain its core markets, Benteler says it is ready for a future in electric vehicles.
Electric drive systems are the sum of Benteler’s competencies, Marco Kollmeier, vice president of the company’s electro-mobility business unit, told Automotive News.
Benteler showed the first iteration of its electric drive at the Shanghai auto show in 2017 and has since been improving the system. It is developing the platform for two customers over the next two years, with more projects expected.
It will go into production in 2021 for the Chinese real estate company Evergrande Group, which plans to enter the electric vehicle market in China. The electric drive system will serve as the basis for that venture’s first vehicle.
Benteler also has an agreement with car manufacturer Automobili Pininfarina to develop the system for a full range of luxury electric vehicles, with production scheduled to start in 2022.
