Overheard: Motivate young technicians by simply communicating with them

"We have a group of leaders saying, 'I actually have no idea; I have no idea if my new people can effectively communicate, or if they're motivated.' And that could be an indicator of why it's harder to retain entrant technicians — communication is important. They need feedback. 'Am I doing a good job? How do I know if I'm doing a good job?' If they get that information, they start to effectively communicate back and forth. You can also coach them, 'Hey, when you have a ticket like this, make sure you're talking to this person verified here.' There's training to that, but the motivation comes from, 'Hey, the guy that hired me, the girl that hired me — the boss — actually cares enough to talk to me and ask me how things are going and give me some pointers and stuff.' That's a motivating thing ...
