VW recalls nearly 100,000 ID4s over faulty door handles

Volkswagen is recalling 98,806 ID4 compact crossovers because of defective door handles that offer insufficient water protection. This can lead to printed circuit board malfunctions if water seeps through and cause an "open command" to the door lock while the vehicle is moving.

The recall affects the 2021-24 Volkswagen ID4 electric vehicle, and all door handles are included.

VW began investigating the issue in February following complaints about the door handle parts. A total of 135 warranty claims from June 2023 to May 2024 have been issued in relation to the defect.

VW said in a statement it is not aware of any accidents or injuries resulting from the issue. The automaker said owners of affected vehicles will be notified before Nov. 1.

Dealers will inspect each door handle and replace it with improved parts if necessary. A vehicle software update will also be performed to adjust the door handle parameters. The recall remedy is still under development.

The door handle manufacturer is U-Shin in Mexico, according to NHTSA documents.
