NHTSA opens probe into Hyundai Palisades over seat belts unlatching

NHTSA opened an investigation into Hyundai Motor Co.'s large crossovers over unlatching seat belts.

The investigation that was opened Aug. 7 covers an estimated 332,288 2020-23 Hyundai Palisades. The investigation is based on 37 complaints alleging that the seat belts inadvertently unlatch, increasing the risk of injury, NHTSA said.

The probe is a "preliminary evaluation" that hopes "to determine the scope and severity of the alleged problem and to assess the potential safety-related consequences," NHTSA said.

The process

Most NHTSA investigations begin as a preliminary evaluation. During this phase, NHTSA requests information from the manufacturer, including data on complaints, injuries and warranty claims. Hyundai may present their perspective on the issue and issue a recall.

After the preliminary evaluation has ended, the investigation can either close or move onto the next phase. If the evaluation finds a safety-related defect, the NHTSA may send a "recall request" letter to the manufacturer.
