NHTSA investigates mysterious fires in Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator

NHTSA is launching an inquiry into Stellantis following reports of unexplained fires starting under vehicle hoods. This investigation is estimated to affect over 780,000 vehicles covering the 2021-23 Jeep Wrangler and 2021-23 Jeep Gladiator model years.

Nine vehicle owner questionnaires were received by the Office of Defects Investigation that reported unexpected fires, and most indicated the fires occurred while the ignition was in the 'OFF' position. The passenger side of the engine compartment is suspected as being the origin point, according to documents filed with NHTSA.

Chrysler responded to the office's inquiry that some fires originated at the power steering pump electrical connector, on the passenger side of the engine compartment, aligning with the majority of the fire reports.

The office is initiating a preliminary evaluation to assess the cause, scope and frequency of the alleged defect.

There is one injury related to these fires, according to the NHTSA filing.

The owner of a 2021 Jeep Wrangler in Rumson, N.J., said the vehicle started smoking and within 10 minutes burst into flames. The owner told NHTSA that "my daughter, dogs and I were able to make it out of the car, but very scary.""

A Stellantis spokesperson stated that the company is "cooperating with NHTSA" as the agency assesses whether a recall is necessary.
