Ford recalls nearly 2 million Explorer crossovers in the U.S. over loose trim

WASHINGTON — Ford Motor Co. is recalling nearly 2 million Explorer crossovers in the U.S. because exterior trim near the windshield could detach while driving, creating a hazard for other road users and increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall covers Ford Explorers from the 2011-19 model years. Globally, about 2.24 million vehicles are being recalled, Ford said.

"Some of the exterior A-pillar applique trim clip attachments are not properly engaged due to improper assembly or repair. If this occurs, the A-pillar applique trim, which borders the right and left side of the windshield, may be loose, missing or become detached," Ford said in a recall report submitted Jan. 19 to NHTSA.

Customers with an affected vehicle might notice gaps around the loose trim or hear a rattle or "excessive wind noise" from the A-pillar area, according to the report.

As of Jan. 12, Ford told NHTSA it was aware of more than 14,300 warranty claims alleging missing or detached exterior A-pillar trim parts. The automaker said it was not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.

Auto supplier ABC Technologies' Windsor Mold Group in Canada makes the A-pillar trim, according to the report.

To fix the issue, dealers will inspect the exterior trim and replace it as necessary.

"We expect only 5 percent of the vehicle population to be affected and encourage customers to contact their dealership for an inspection when parts are available. At that point, customers will have free access to mobile repair and pick-up-and-delivery services at participating dealerships," Ford spokesperson Maria Buczkowski said in a statement to Automotive News.

Ford had the most recalls of any U.S. automaker in 2023, issuing 58 recalls that covered nearly 6.2 million vehicles.

The Ford Explorer recall is the automaker's first recall of 2024, according to NHTSA data.

"We're constantly working to improve vehicle quality and deliver the best experience for our customers," Buczkowski said. "Our initial quality is improving and customers with our latest vehicles are benefiting from it."
