Tesla Cybertruck deliveries on hold over accelerator issue, reports say

Tesla Cybertrucks are piling up at the automaker's Texas factory, and reservation holders say deliveries are on hold due to a potentially loose accelerator pedal cover, according to online forums.

On the Cybertruck Owners Forum, several reservation holders said their scheduled deliveries were canceled in recent days. Some said that they were told by Tesla customer service that there was a problem with the pickup's accelerator pedal that had to be fixed prior to delivery.

"Finally supposed to pick up my Cybertruck in Kansas City," wrote forum user Darick last week, who said he was originally scheduled for delivery on Saturday before the appointment was canceled. "They stated there was a problem with the accelerator pedal."

Another forum user, Saber, posted what they said was an official communication from Tesla customer service on Monday. "There is currently a hold on the vehicle for replacing the accelerator pedal," the post said.

Tesla doesn't have a U.S. press office to seek comment. Tesla's X account, which posts official information from the automaker, had not commented on the Cybertruck issue as of late Tuesday. Tesla CEO Elon Musk owns X, formerly known as Twitter.

Business Insider reported Monday that NHTSA was aware of the issue and in contact with Tesla.

On TikTok, a Cybertruck owner posted a video Sunday in which he showed how his accelerator pedal cover came loose, slid forward and jammed under the dash.

"It held the accelerator down 100 percent, full throttle," he said in the video while demonstrating on his Cybertruck. "Holding the brake down overrides the [accelerator] pedal, so I was able to stop the car."

His video drew millions of views to the el.chepito1985 account, he said in a follow-up video Monday. He also said that once the pedal cover was removed, the accelerator operated normally.

A YouTube video of drone footage from Tesla's Austin, Texas, plant Monday showed a large number of Cybertrucks piling up in parking areas. The drone footage came from the Brad Sloan YouTube account.

On X, a Tesla fan account said there were more than 900 Cybertrucks spotted at the factory seen in the drone footage. "This pileup is due to a delivery hold from an accelerator pedal issue," wrote Sawyer Merritt, who posts news about electric vehicles on X and sometimes interacts with Musk on the social media platform.

A Cybertruck owner who also runs a Tesla fan account on X and sometimes interacts with Musk, WholeMarsBlog, said Saturday: "Tesla has stopped all Cybertruck deliveries for 7 days due to an issue with the accelerator pedal." He added: "No this isn't a joke... it's not funny so it's not a joke."

Tesla Cybertruck owners have reported multiple problems with the pickup, which launched in November. They include powertrain problems, requiring a tow truck and misaligned panels, according to online forums.

One issue highlighted by a popular YouTube presenter, Marques Brownlee, was a driver's door that wouldn't close flush with the Cybertruck's stainless-steel body. Teslas are known, in general, to have issues with panels that don't fit properly, creating "panel gaps," or alignment issues.

In the case of Brownlee, Musk addressed the issue on his X account last month.

"Not a 'door fit' issue," Musk wrote on March 19. "About 15 Cybertrucks in service had an issue where the door striker loosened in the field, due to insufficient torque after door fit. This takes 5 mins to fix in service and has been addressed in production," Musk wrote.

According to U.S. data from S&P Global Mobility, there were 633 Tesla Cybertruck registrations in the first two months of 2024, the most recent data available. Tesla doesn't break out sales by model in its sales reports.
