Design historians of the future will look back to spring 2019 as a time of contradictory expression, judging from the designs on display at this month's New York auto show. A new age was dawning, they'll say, with designers mastering the skill of putting larger people into smaller spaces and electrification coming on like an asteroid. And yet, get a load of those big honking grilles! Was this the last hurrah for gasping, oxygen-thirsty engine compartments that desperately needed to throw off excess heat? Or was it, wiser historians might ask, simply a recognition that consumers loved a cool design?
The 2020 Nissan GT-R Nismo features carbon fiber components throughout the sports car, including the front and rear bumpers, front fenders, hood, roof, trunk and rear spoiler. Nissan says those parts save a combined 23 pounds. Other design touches include 20-inch aluminum wheels, yellow brake calipers and blue tips on the exhaust.
Nissan will be offering a 50th anniversary edition of the 370Z for the 2020 model year. The special model will be available with either white and red accents or silver with black accents, Nissan says. Anniversary badging and 19-inch wheels are also part of the package. Inside, there are more anniversary logos as well as an Alcantara wrapped steering wheel.
The updates to the 2020 R8 include fresh exterior styling, new colors inside and out, and new wheels to go with enhanced performance from the naturally aspirated 5.2-liter gasoline engine. Audi says the engine on the R8 V-10 Coupe gained 30 hp, lifting the total to 562 hp and allowing the supercar to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 201 mph.
