Stellantis to adopt Tesla charging ports starting with 2026 EVs

Stellantis on Monday said it will begin equipping electric vehicles with the same charging connector Tesla uses beginning on select 2026 models in North America.

Stellantis is among the last major automakers to agree to follow the North American Charging Standard, also known as SAE J3400. Stellantis plans to release several EVs this year, including the Ram 1500 REV pickup and the Jeep Recon utility vehicle.

During the transition, Stellantis said it will make adapters available for its vehicles fitted with the Combined Charging System ports it currently uses, "enabling drivers to access a growing private and public J3400 infrastructure to meet J3400/1 requirements still being developed this year." The adapters — and eventual switch to NACS ports — could allow buyers of Stellantis EVs to use Tesla's nationwide Supercharger network.

"Customers win when the industry aligns on open standards," Ricardo Stamatti, Stellantis senior vice president of global energy & charging, said in a statement. "We are happy to announce our backing and adoption of the SAE J3400 connector, a milestone for all customers on the path to open and seamless charging. Our Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan puts customers at the center of open interoperability and freedom of mobility for all."

Stellantis said this development builds upon the Ionna charging network joint venture announced in June 2023. Stellantis has joined BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz to develop a high-powered network with at least 30,000 charge points in urban and highway locations across North America by 2030.

EVs of any brand can use Ionna chargers. The network supports vehicles equipped with either NACS or CCS connectors.
