Kyle Vogt resigns from GM self-driving unit Cruise

Kyle Vogt resigned from his position as CEO of Cruise, the company said Sunday night.

His departure is the latest fallout from a safety crisis at the beleaguered self-driving unit of General Motors.

Starting Sunday, Mo Elshenawy, currently the company's executive vice president of engineering, will assume duties as president and chief technology officer.

Craig Glidden, GM's executive vice president of legal and policy and a Cruise board member, will also serve as a president and continue as chief administrative officer. Jon McNeill, who joined the Cruise board last month, has been appointed vice chairman of the board, serving alongside Chair Mary Barra.

Vogt's downfall marks an abrupt end to his tenure with a company he co-founded in 2013. This was his second stint as CEO. He took over last December after longtime GM executive Dan Amman departed.

Vogt announced his departure on X.

"Cruise is still just getting started, and I believe it has a great future ahead," he wrote. "The folks at Cruise are brilliant, driven and resilient."

It comes amid a shake-up that started when the California Department of Motor Vehicles suspended Cruise's driverless permits in October. Those developments followed a crash between a Cruise robotaxi and a pedestrian in San Francisco.

Among the reasons DMV officials gave for the action: They alleged Cruise misrepresented circumstances related to how its vehicle behaved during and after the collision.

Cruise paused all its operations across the country in the aftermath of the suspension, which remains in place indefinitely. The company has hired independent safety experts to analyze its operations.

"The results of our ongoing reviews will inform additional next steps as we work to build a better Cruise centered around safety, transparency and trust," the company said Sunday.
