Pony.ai started 2020 on a high note. The Chinese company secured $400 million from Toyota, deepening a partnership that began last year.
Pony.ai CEO James Peng told Bloomberg TV the investment would help the company commercialize autonomous vehicles faster.
Technically, it has already gone to market. It had been running autonomous ride-hailing pilots in Irvine and Fremont, Calif. But in April, in response to COVID-19, it began working with e-commerce company Yamibuy to ferry packages and groceries in Irvine.
It's also providing contactless deliveries to residents of an emergency shelter in Fremont.
In Beijing, Pony.ai won approval this month to test autonomous vehicles on public roads with passengers on board.
