NEXT STAGE: Addition in 2019
Mazda has been promising a U.S. version of its global diesel motor in the CX-5 crossover for years, and it's finally arrived, "with pre-sales beginning immediately." With a suggested retail price of $42,045, including shipping, and an estimated 28 mpg combined in city and highway, the CX-5 Signature all-wheel-drive diesel with a 2.2-liter motor is more expensive, less powerful and only moderately more fuel efficient (15 percent) than the new turbocharged gasoline version wearing the same trim.
NEXT STAGE: Redesign in 2021
A redesign could arrive for the 2022 model year. The second-generation compact crossover hit the market in 2017. It was fitted with cylinder-deactivation technology to improve fuel efficiency. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert were made standard across all trims
