Toyota Prius, Honda Accord, Ford Super Duty, Chevrolet Silverado EV, 3 more EVs are 2024 NACTOY finalists

The battle for 2024 North American car, truck and utility of the year is set.

At the Los Angeles Auto Show on Thursday, Honda, Hyundai and Toyota made the cut for car of the year, while two Chevrolet pickups are up against the Ford Super Duty in the truck category. And Genesis and Kia face off against Volvo for utility of the year honors.

The car finalists are the redesigned Honda Accord sedan, the redesigned Toyota Prius hatchback and the new Hyundai Ionic 6 sedan. Chevrolet's redesigned midsize Colorado and the new Silverado EV electric pickup are in the finals against the redesigned Ford Super Duty.

The utility vehicle finalists are a trio of EVs: the Volvo EX30, the Kia EV9 and the Genesis GV70.

The nine finalists were culled from 52 eligible vehicles by 50 American and Canadian automotive journalists. The 52 vehicles were whittled down to 25 in September, and then in October, jurors met in Ann Arbor, Mich., to test the semifinalists back-to-back over three days.

The winners will be announced Jan. 4 at the M1 Concourse racetrack in Pontiac, Mich. 

All three winners of last year’s awards have a chance to defend their titles. Honda’s Acura division won car of the year in 2023, while the Ford Lightning and Kia EV6 took home the trophy for truck and utility of the year.

In the last five years, Hyundai (including Genesis) and Kia have won a combined six awards, while Ford has bagged five trophies.
