UAW President Shawn Fain on guest list for Biden's State of the Union address

WASHINGTON — UAW President Shawn Fain is on the guest list for President Joe Biden's State of the Union address, the White House said Thursday.

Fain will attend the president's annual speech before a joint Congress as one of several guests joining first lady Jill Biden on Thursday at 9 p.m. EST.

"Each of these individuals were invited by the White House because they personify issues or themes to be addressed by the president in his speech, or they embody the Biden-Harris administration's policies at work for the American people," the White House said in a statement.

Fain's attendance comes after the UAW in January endorsed Biden for reelection, marking a major boost for the Democratic incumbent who has labeled himself the "most pro-union president in history" as he tries to maintain support of working-class voters.

Biden is facing a rematch with former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election that could put environmental and trade policies — including issues surrounding the electric vehicle transition — at the forefront.

The union has not been supportive of Trump, arguing that he serves the "billionaire class" and is unfriendly to labor.

"Donald Trump is a scab. Donald Trump is a billionaire, and that's who he represents," Fain said in scathing remarks after endorsing Biden.

A UAW spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
