DETROIT — Acting UAW President Rory Gamble spoke with Staff Reporter Michael Martinez last week about taking charge of the union in the wake of the corruption scandal. Here are edited excerpts.
Q: The board was reportedly split in its decision to accept Gary Jones' request for a leave of absence. Is that division a problem?
A: Our board is very spirited. Everybody has an opinion. They're not afraid to share their opinions. I would say our board is not split now. I've talked to 100 percent of the board, and everybody's on the same page personally. We had opinions about how we should go about doing it, but I would not say that there was any division about me. I appreciate that and I really welcome that vote of confidence. This is a very difficult task and a very difficult job. The blessing here is we have a great support staff. We have a lot of great leadership that steps up to make sure we continue representing all those members. I'm very ready to take this task on.
