Ford Motor Co. calls its F-100 Eluminator concept "the future of custom vehicles," though it borrows a design from the automaker's past.
The company unveiled the concept, based on a 1978 F-100 pickup, at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas last week.
Ford said the all-wheel-drive truck has a 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition battery-electric powertrain consisting of two e-crate motors, one on each axle. Combined output is 480 hp and 634 pound-feet of torque.
Ford said the e-crate motor starts at $3,900 and is street-legal in all 50 states. It's targeted to builders looking to electrify a range of vehicles, from modern to vintage cars, pickups and SUVs.
The concept prompted pleas on Twitter for Ford to put the truck into production or develop retro-styled electric vehicles.
"Who doesn't love a throwback?" CEO Jim Farley responded to one fan. "I'll see what I can do."
Down the road, Ford Performance plans to work with leading performance manufacturers to develop more components for the Eluminator powertrain, including battery systems, controllers and traction inverters.
