TO THE EDITOR:
Lack of sedans will be the death of Ford, Chevrolet and Fiat Chrysler. Sounds funny to say, but it's true. The Detroit 3 are shortsighted with their decisions. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru and Hyundai continue to send new sedans to the showrooms.
A September New York Times article quoted Brian Smith, COO of Hyundai Motor America, as saying Hyundai would be "happy to have" Ford Fusion or Chevrolet Impala buyers. A study from Edmunds shows people have been trading in the Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cruze for other brands' small cars because Ford and Chevrolet have nothing for them to buy.
As I talk to dealers and fixed ops managers, I hear dismay at the Detroit 3 giving away another segment to import brands. There are more sedans sold a year than the total number of Detroit 3 pickups sold. Why in anyone's right mind leave a 5 million vehicle market in your backyard? Remember, arrogance breeds ignorance. I task the Detroit 3 with asking their dealers what we need to sell.
