TO THE EDITOR:
Regarding "Four automakers, California strike compromise on vehicle emissions," autonews.com, July 25: This is not doable under current regulations by the California Air Resources Board and the EPA. It is a waste of time.
One of the primary problems caused by ever-increasing emissions regulations is loss of fuel economy. This comes from duty/driving cycle, engine oil volatility, emission control systems, maintenance schedules, engine computer control and finally dirty/carboned-up engines — look at the gasoline direct-injection engine. This kind of thing is ripping off the driving public.
