VW's U.S. lineup on cusp of ID Buzz arrival

This was supposed to be the year Volkswagen's electric vehicle lineup in the United States went from one model to three.

The German brand instead will add just the long-awaited ID Buzz electric minivan. In May, VW delayed the U.S. launch of the ID7, an electric sedan that would have likely had a sticker price between $50,000 and $60,000.

Volkswagen Group of America CEO Pablo Di Si has all but confirmed that hybrids are bound for the brand's U.S. lineup, which currently has none. The VW brand launched a plug-in hybrid Tiguan in Europe, and Di Si has said the powertrain has potential here.

ID Buzz: The U.S. arrival of the retro-styled microbus will finally happen by year end. The ID Buzz will be offered in one body style in the U.S.: a long-wheelbase, three-row model with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. VW said the 2025 ID Buzz will be available in two trims, Pro S and Pro S Plus, along with a launch-only 1st Edition. Di Si has hinted at a family of ID Buzz models once the model is launched, but the timing is unclear.

Atlas-size electric crossover: Di Si this year also reaffirmed that a larger electric crossover remains in the automaker's plans, but timing remains murky. An arrival closer to the end of the decade, and after redesigns of the Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport, seems likely.

ID4: For the 2024 model year, the ID4 with the larger 82-kilowatt-hour battery received a boost in power and range. It also gained a larger 12.9-inch infotainment screen. The electric compact crossover should carry until 2027 when it will be due for a redesign.

ID7: The electric sedan was scheduled to launch in the third quarter, but VW said the nameplate's U.S. arrival has been delayed for an unspecified period.

Atlas/Atlas Cross Sport: The Atlas is set for a redesign in 2026 while the redesign of the five-seat Cross Sport should follow after, likely by the end of 2026 or early 2027.

Tiguan: VW's bestseller in the U.S. will get a redesign and a new high-performance version in 2025. It's unclear if the crossover will launch with a hybrid powertrain option but that could arrive later as part of a freshen.

Taos: VW's smallest crossover is set for what the brand is calling a major freshen. It will debut late in the third quarter, VW said. Deliveries should likely begin by year end or at the beginning of 2025.

Jetta/Jetta GLI: VW's entry model, along with the GLI performance variant, was freshened with a slightly updated front, rear and interior for the 2025 model year. It will arrive at dealerships by the end of the third quarter. The compact sedan will now soldier on for the foreseeable future.

Golf GTI/Golf R: The pair of freshened hot hatches have already been shown for other markets such as Europe with slight tweaks to the interior, exterior and powertrain. The updated models will arrive in the U.S. in the first half of 2025.
