EVs trickle into Toyota's broad lineup

Toyota will transition the Highlander from a combustion vehicle to electric, add several new nameplates, including a large three-row electric vehicle, and continue work on a unibody compact pickup over the next four years.

Meanwhile, an updated platform will begin making its way through some of the Japanese brand's most popular vehicles, including the compact RAV4 and the midsize Camry.

Toyota will also continue to invest in sedan segments, where it now holds enviable market shares as competitors drop out. The product cadence for sedan nameplates will be extended to lower costs, however.

Electric three-row crossover: Shown in concept form at an event in Japan in 2021 as the bZ5X, the three-row crossover is on track to be made at Toyota's Georgetown assembly plant in Kentucky in the second half of 2025 and arrive in dealerships late that year or early 2026, depending on production issues. The size of the crossover is not yet known, but given a recent announcement concerning the current Highlander, it is thought that it will have a larger third row and larger battery pack for more range.

Highlander: With its sales hugely cannibalized by the 2023 introduction of the larger Grand Highlander, Toyota's smaller three-row crossover will be reengineered in 2025 as an EV while keeping its nameplate, though given the timing, it may not appear in dealerships until early 2026.

bZ4X: The electric compact crossover is the brand's first product to ride on Toyota's e-TNGA dedicated EV platform. The bZ4X remains scheduled for a reengineering in 2026, though an earlier product intervention is possible as Toyota's battery technology improves.

Electric sedan: While Toyota showed a concept electric sedan in 2021, its potential appearance in the U.S. selling alongside the popular Camry and Corolla is unscheduled, but it may be in 2027.

Mirai: Redesigned in 2020, the low-volume hydrogen-powered sedan is likely to remain largely as-is for the foreseeable future, with only modest changes.

Tundra: The full-size pickup is due for a midcycle freshening in late 2025.

Tacoma: The redesigned midsize pickup is due for a freshening in 2027, given Toyota's current product cycle for body-on-frame vehicles.

Corolla-based pickup: Sources indicate that development work is continuing on a small unibody pickup that would give Toyota a Ford Maverick competitor as a hybridized gasoline-powered vehicle. However, it's not expected in the market until 2027.

Sequoia: Toyota's large three-row body-on-frame SUV is due for a midcycle freshening in 2026.

Land Cruiser: Redesigned on the Toyota Prado and moved down-market when it was reintroduced this year, the Land Cruiser isn't due for a freshening until 2028.

4Runner: When the last of the brand's "Four Brothers" body-on-frame vehicles arrives in dealerships late this year, the redesigned 4Runner will bring an optional hybrid powertrain similar to the Tacoma, improved infotainment and driver-assistance systems, and nine trim levels. It is due for a freshening in 2028.

Grand Highlander: The larger three-row crossover is due for a midcycle freshening in 2027, given Toyota's current product development schedule.

Crown Signia: Brought to the U.S. this year, the Crown Signia crossover isn't due for a freshening until 2028.

RAV4: The planned redesign of Toyota's bestselling nameplate in the U.S. has been moved up to the second half of 2025, with an updated platform, safety and infotainment upgrades plus styling updates for the compact crossover.

Corolla Cross: The subcompact crossover is due for a freshening in 2026, given Toyota's current product development schedule.

Sienna: The redesigned minivan arrived in late 2020 and will get a midcycle freshening in fall 2024, with a reengineering scheduled for 2027.

Crown: The hybrid-only lifted fastback sedan is due for a midcycle freshening in 2026.

Camry: Toyota will redesign its still popular midsize sedan, now offered exclusively as a hybrid, in 2028.

Corolla: The compact sedan family is due for a freshening in spring 2025.

Prius/Prius Prime: The hybrid family is due for a midcycle freshening in 2026.

GR Supra: The fate of the sports car developed extensively under the watchful eye of Chairman Akio Toyoda is unclear because its assembly is under contract by Magna Steyr, with engines sourced from BMW. It is expected to end production in Austria in 2026, but Toyota could find a way to extend it somewhere with a new engine, if emotions overrule business sense.

GR Corolla: The hot hatch gets a reengineering late this year with the addition of an optional automatic transmission. It is due for a freshening in 2026.

GR 86: Toyota's sporty coupe is expected to be freshened in 2026, so long as Subaru opts to continue its sibling vehicle, the Subaru BRZ.
