Stellantis expanding EV portfolio

Stellantis stepped further into electrification in 2024 with the debut of several battery-electric vehicles in North America, and even more are on the way in the next several years.

The automaker has taken a leading position in plug-in hybrid sales with 4xe variants of the Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee, but now it's ready to flesh out a roster of fully electric models.

The tiny Fiat 500e and Ram ProMaster electric vehicles went on sale this year. They'll soon be joined by the Jeep Wagoneer S and Recon, the Dodge Charger Daytona and the Ram 1500 REV. Chrysler is looking to go all-electric by 2028, with its first EV coming in 2026. Alfa Romeo hopes to do the same by 2027.

In addition to EVs, Stellantis will churn out a slate of range-extended electrified models with on-board gas generators. The first will be the 1500 Ramcharger in 2025. An electric Wagoneer SUV with a range extender also could go into production in 2025, according to the automaker's UAW contract, while the Wrangler is due to get a range-extended electric version in 2028.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares has emphasized that EVs will have to be affordable for the middle class and said "around $25,000" is the sweet spot.

The company is hoping to reach that mark with the next Jeep Renegade, expected around 2027. At the automaker's investor day in June, Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa said the Renegade EV will come in under $25,000.

Tavares in June said that vehicle would need to use lithium iron phosphate batteries to achieve that price target. Such batteries, already used in some Stellantis vehicles, are 25 percent less expensive to manufacture than the nickel manganese cobalt batteries that have been popular in the industry, he said.

"If we want to protect the jobs in the U.S. and the manufacturing footprint in the U.S., we need to find the conditions to make a $25,000 BEV in the U.S. that we can sell at significant volumes with reasonable margins for that proposal to the market to be sustainable," Tavares said.
