Genesis spurred by new stores, performance

Genesis has been busy cementing its luxury image in the U.S., including launching performance-minded vehicles and opening stand-alone retail facilities — a move that will separate it further from Hyundai, the mass-market brand that created it.

The brand just announced the opening of 21 storefronts — including nine in eight new states — raising its total in the U.S. to 56 dealerships. Genesis ended 2023 with 11 new facilities, so it quadrupled its pace through the first seven months of the year.

Performance also is top of mind. A sleek coupe version of the GV80 crossover went on sale this summer to satisfy buyers who prefer fastback styling and a 409-hp 3.5-liter V-6 with an electric supercharger.

Genesis revealed four Magma concepts at the 2024 New York auto show to display the brand's engineering chops for high-powered electric vehicles. The first to arrive in the U.S. will be the GV60 Magma, a souped-up version of Genesis' only dedicated EV, the GV60 subcompact crossover.

A fifth concept unveiled at the show, the Neolun, showcased an ultraluxe three-row crossover that's likely the blueprint for the GV90 electric crossover — Genesis' high-end answer to Kia's EV9 and Hyundai's upcoming Ioniq 9.

Meanwhile, the brand's rollout of EVs has undergone some adjustments, but its target to convert the Genesis lineup to all-electric by 2030 has not changed.

Some of the brand's EVs will come to market later than expected and three of its gasoline-powered models — the GV70, G80 and G90 — will likely stay until the end of the decade. Though all are slated for dedicated electric counterparts, there may be an overlap where two platforms exist wearing the same badge.

With the backing of Hyundai Motor Group and the benefit of its rapid development of EV technology and investment in localization of electric supply chains, these changes are purposeful product planning decisions rather than structural delays.

GV90: A large electric three-row crossover based on the Neolun concept Genesis unveiled at the 2024 New York auto show is expected to arrive in mid-2026. It will likely wear the GV90 badge and be imported from Korea.

GV80 EV: An electric version of the gasoline-powered GV80 is expected to arrive in early 2029. Its nameplate is unlikely to include the Electrified moniker because it will be a dedicated EV unlike the Electrified GV70 and Electrified G80, which use multipurpose platforms. The GV80 EV will likely ride on the IMA platform. The coupe variant, which debuted alongside a GV80 freshen in 2024, could go all-electric by the end of the decade.

Electrified GV70: The compact crossover is an electrified variant of the gasoline-powered GV70 that rides on a multipurpose platform like the Electrified G80. For 2025, it carries over unchanged. Production of the Electrified GV70 will likely end in 2027. It will be replaced by the GV70 EV.

GV70 EV: A dedicated GV70 EV built on the IMA platform should replace the Electrified GV70 in early 2028. The gasoline-powered GV70 is expected to continue until the end of the decade, so there will be two versions of the GV70 with different platforms and the same name.

GV60: Genesis' first dedicated EV, the compact crossover went on sale last year and offers a smaller, sportier package than the Electrified GV70. For 2025, the GV60 adds an all-wheel-drive model with 19-inch wheels. It will likely get a freshening in 2025, and a new generation riding on the IMA platform could come in late 2029. A GV60 Magma performance variant based on the fiery concept shown at the New York show is expected in late 2025.

G90 EV: A dedicated G90 EV will likely replace the gasoline model at the end of the decade. The electric version of the large sedan will ride on the IMA platform.

Electrified G80: The electric midsize sedan is the battery-powered counterpart of the G80 and will likely undergo a freshening next year. Like the Electrified GV70, it's built on a multipurpose platform. Production of the Electrified G80 will likely end when a dedicated GV80 EV built on the IMA platform replaces it at the end of the decade.

G80 EV: A dedicated G80 EV built on the IMA platform is likely to replace the Electrified G80 and the gasoline-powered G80 in 2030, coinciding with a possible redesign.

G70 EV: A dedicated G70 EV built on the IMA platform could arrive in late 2028. At that point, the gasoline-powered G70 will go into sell-down mode. Genesis also could decide not to give the G70 an electric variant.

X Convertible: A halo vehicle based on the sleek, open-roof four-door concept Genesis revealed at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show is expected to debut in 2026. The pricey, low-volume EV is intended to be a brand booster and should be a stunning centerpiece in Genesis showrooms.

GV80: Genesis debuted a freshened GV80 midsize crossover at the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show alongside a sportier coupe variant that has two well-equipped trim levels depending on powertrain. The GV80 Coupe 3.5T's twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine, making 375 hp and 391 pound-feet of torque, is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The GV80 Coupe 3.5 e-Supercharger uses a 3.5-liter V-6 with a 48-volt electric supercharger that boosts output to 409 hp and 405 pound-feet of torque. Both are awd only.

The 2025 GV80 features a revised interior with a 27-inch organic light emitting diode display that integrates the digital gauge cluster and center touchscreen, a touch-based HVAC system and a redesigned crystal-like shifter. Exterior updates include larger air intakes, a skid plate design on the front bumper, chrome trim and new wheel offerings.

A freshen of the GV80 Coupe is expected in 2028. The current generation of both the GV80 and GV80 Coupe will stick around until the end of the decade. A GV80 EV could come in 2029 so there might be two versions of with different platforms and the same name.

GV70: Genesis' most popular vehicle carries over mostly unchanged for 2025 but for the addition of standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as four new colors: Storr Green, Storr Green Matte, Matterhorn White Matte and Makalu Grey Matte. Genesis will likely extend the life cycle of this generation through the end of the decade. A dedicated electric variant of the GV70 is expected in 2028, so there will be two versions of the GV70 with different platforms and the same name.

G90: A freshening of the large sedan is expected in the second half of 2025. It's likely the G90 won't transition to an all-electric lineup until the end of the decade.

G80: The gasoline-powered midsize sedan could undergo a minor freshening this year. It's likely the G80 will continue through the end of the decade until it moves onto an electric platform for the next generation.

G70: For 2025, Genesis' most popular entry compact sport sedan carries over unchanged. It's unlikely the G70 will see other changes until late 2028 when the line goes all-electric — if Genesis decides to continue the model. Like the GV80, it would be one of the first existing Genesis nameplates to move to a dedicated electric platform, likely IMA, bypassing the Electrified designation.
