Ram on brink of an electric truck era

The 2021 model year saw Ram up the performance ante in the pickup world with the 1500 TRX, a blistering hauler that churns out 702 hp.

The next phase will focus on electrifying the lineup. An electric 1500 pickup is in the cards for 2024, after an electric ProMaster van in 2023.

Ram's 2022 models are being updated with the Uconnect 5 infotainment system.

Midsize pickup: It sounded like a midsize pickup was a possibility in 2019, when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Mike Manley said the company was "focused on solving a metric ton midsize truck solution for us because it's a big part of the portfolio and growth we want to achieve." Then FCA trademarked "Dakota" last year, the name of the midsize pickup it dropped in 2011 after a 25-year run. But the future remains unclear for the project.

1500: The lineup was burnished with several new packages to keep things fresh, including G/T and BackCountry packages for the 1500's Big Horn and Lone Star trims along with a 10th Anniversary Edition of the Limited trim. The Ram Clean Air System, filtering 95 percent of particulates, is now standard on all 2022 1500 models. A freshening should be in store for 2023. An electric version is slated for a 2024 release. The previous-generation 1500 Classic is slated to continue production through 2023.

2500/3500: Freshened versions of the heavy-duty trucks are expected to roll out around the same time as the 1500, in 2023. Redesigns are not expected until around 2027.

ProMaster City: A redesigned model of the small van is expected to arrive in 2024.

ProMaster: The large van will get an electric variant in 2023. Ram says the 2022 model is the most advanced yet, with Uconnect 5 and available active driving-assist and adaptive cruise control.
