We asked fixed ops managers: How is your shop preparing to work on large numbers of electric and autonomous vehicles?
"We are taking a cautious approach before investing heavily in capital. The manufacturer sends us required tools and charging equipment for electric and autonomous vehicles. We train our technicians and advisers. However, our customer base does not seem to be clamoring for these vehicles here versus states located on the coast."
TODD McCALLUM, Fixed operations director, Walker Automotive Group, Alexandria, La.
"I've made sure most of my technicians are factory-certified in new technologies, hybrid systems and electric systems. Keeping my technicians and advisers up to date on new bulletins each week has been crucial to understanding the way new technologies are designed to work, so that we can educate our customers, diagnose concerns accurately and repair problems correctly."
AMBERLEE DINGESS, Service manager, Bald Hill Kia, Warwick, R.I.
"We took the opportunity to install multiple charging stations and develop our in-house technician training programs to highlight the necessary precautions when working on noninternal combustion vehicles. We are ready to expand our hours of operation to meet the changing demand when autonomous vehicles move into the marketplace."
ED ROBERTS, Fixed operations director, Bozard Ford-Lincoln, St. Augustine, Fla.
"We have sent our technicians to Audi e-tron technical training and purchased all the necessary tools and equipment for the shop. We ensured we have the correct lifts to accommodate the removal of battery packs when needed. We've upgraded our communication platform with customers."
CHRISTIAN PEDERSON, Fixed operations director, Audi Bozeman in Montana
"My team participates in training and awareness courses provided by the manufacturer. My technicians maintain their electric vehicle certifications, and an in-house apprentice program is designed to allow our noncertified technicians time to shadow the master certified technicians."
MICHAEL KELLY, Service director, Lester Glenn Hyundai, Toms River, N.J.
