DETROIT — In his brief time as General Motors' North America chief, Barry Engle amassed broad dealer support and a track record for delivering profits under difficult circumstances. But instead of continuing to climb the ladder at GM, Engle is stepping aside in pursuit of a CEO job elsewhere.
Engle's departure may be surprising to some, especially the dealers who considered him an ally. But his resume shows a wide geographic footprint, a willingness to lead and a penchant for new endeavors.
Engle, 56, will leave GM after assisting Cadillac President Steve Carlisle's transition to president of North America as of Sept. 1.
