While the numbers of both U.S. dealerships and franchises dropped marginally in 2021, sales throughput for all outlets rose slightly last year, a recovery from the sizable drop in the industry's average new-vehicle sales per franchise in 2020, when the coronavirus outbreak stalled sales.
Automotive News' annual dealership census found that new vehicles sold per franchise increased 3.6 percent to 466 on average in 2021. The census ranks 41 brands for throughput, a measurement of a dealership network's health. Last year's throughput gain came as U.S. light-vehicle sales, excluding Tesla, rose 2.5 percent to nearly 14.75 million vehicles, according to the Automotive News Research & Data Center.
The throughput gain reflected the modest dips in U.S. franchise and dealership numbers. The overall dealership count dropped for the second-straight year by a margin of 0.3 percent, this time falling to 18,211 stores as of Jan. 1. New-vehicle franchises dipped by 1.3 percent to 31,410.
