Carvana chooses ADESA Houston for second reconditioning ‘megasite'

Carvana Co.'s conversion of the ADESA wholesale auction network continues — this time in Texas.

The company said Sept. 9 it plans to equip ADESA Houston — a 43-acre wholesale auction with more than 5,000 parking spaces — to house its own vehicle inspection and reconditioning processes. It also will maintain the site's original online and in-lane auctions, according to a news release.

Carvana, of Tempe, Ariz., is categorizing large ADESA auction locations that are converted to have those joint capabilities as "megasites." ADESA Kansas City, of Belton, Mo., was the first to receive that designation. ADESA Houston is the second.

Its transition to a megasite unlocks more overall reconditioning capacity for Carvana, said Brian Boyd, the company's senior vice president of inventory.

The integration also will enable "faster delivery times for local retail customers, a more robust auction offering for local commercial customers, and new jobs and training opportunities" in the Houston area, Boyd said in a statement.

Carvana has started hiring 100 associates for ADESA Houston. It plans to add a total of about 200 entry-level and skilled jobs in the area "over time," according to the news release.

Other auctions at which Carvana has established its own inspection and reconditioning processes are ADESA Buffalo in Akron, N.Y., and ADESA Portland in Wood Village, Ore. Those two locations maintain online auctions only.

Carvana, an online used-vehicle retailer, acquired the 56-site ADESA auction network in 2022.
