Some automaker initiatives to reduce store counts proved strong last year.

Car and light-truck dealerships in the U.S.
General Motors and Ford Motor Co. both saw a drop in the number of dealerships last year, while Stellantis registered a slight decrease. The number of import-only dual dealerships fell last year, while import-badged exclusives increased to 7,975 as of Jan. 1 2024, from 7,803 the prior year.

U.S. new-car and light-truck sales per franchise, 2023 vs. 2022
Average new-vehicle sales per franchise, or throughput, jumped 14% in 2023 to 483, amid a lower franchise count and higher U.S. light-vehicle sales. 42 brands are ranked, with Toyota remaining No. 1. There was little change in the top 10 ranking, except for Honda moving up 5 spots to No. 3, BMW sliding from No. 3 to No. 4 and Mercedes-Benz falling 4 spots to No. 8.

Car and light-truck franchises in the U.S.
The number of franchises fell 3.6% last year to 30,225 on Jan. 1, 2024, with U.S.- and import-badged franchise groups declining year over year. Brands including Buick, Jaguar, Lincoln and Genesis saw the largest percentage decreases from 2023. Polestar, Lotus and Mitsubishi were among brands with the highest percentage gains in 2023.
