Volkswagen declared the launch of the Jetta subbrand in China a successful one with sales of nearly 30,000 in the first three months.
Jetta’s first two models -- the VS5 compact crossover and the VA3 compact sedan – hit showrooms in early September.
“This makes the Jetta launch the most successful recent brand introduction in China, taking into account the first three months of sales,” VW brand said.
The VS5 accounted for nearly 80 percent of the nearly 30,000 vehicles sold under the Jetta brand, VW added.
Jetta, previously a volume model under the VW brand, was introduced as an entry-level subbrand specifically for China in February 2018.
The entry-level segment, where 80 percent of customers are first-time buyers, has long been the reserved territory of Chinese brands.
Jetta unveiled its first three products -- the VS5, VA3 and VS7 -- in the southwest China city of Chengdu in March last year.
The VS7 -- a crossover slightly bigger than the VS5 -- will hit the market in the near future, VW said.
The three Jetta models were designed at VW's headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany, and assembled at FAW-VW's Chengdu plant.
FAW-VW, VW Group’s joint venture with China FAW Group Corp., also builds and markets vehicles for VW and Audi brands.
The Jetta subbrand has its own distribution network in China. FAW-VW plans to open more than 200 Jetta stores by year-end.
