Major Chinese EV battery makers outpace global rivals in H1 shipment growth

Six major Chinese battery suppliers posted higher growth than their global competitors in shipments of full electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and hybrids in the first half of the year, according to SNE Research, a Korean consultancy.

The six companies – CATL, BYD, CALB, EVE Energy, Gotion High Tech and Sunwoda Electronic – are on SNE’s list of the world’s top 10 battery suppliers for EVs, plug-in hybrids and hybrids for the period.

In the first half, CATL continued to top the list, with battery shipment jumping 30 percent from a year earlier to 137.7 gigawatt-hours.

BYD, in the second spot, saw its shipment advance 22 percent to 57.5 GWh.

CALB, EVE, Gotion and Sunwoda ranked fifth, eighth, ninth and 10th. CALB's battery shipment surged 35 percent to 16.7 GWh and EVE's was up 38 percent to 9.0 GWh, while Gotion rose 19 percent to 7.8 GWh and Sunwoda increased 62 percent to 7.5 GWh.

Three Korean companies, LG Energy Solution, SK On and Samsung SKI, ranked third, fourth and sixth. Shipment was up 5.7 percent for LG Energy Solution to 46.9 GWh and up 5.4 percent for SK On to 17.3 GWh, while Samsung SKI saw a rise of 17 percent to 16.4 GWh.

Japan's Panasonic, ranked seventh, was the only company that posted a shipment decline in the first half. The company shipped 16.2 GWh of batteries in the period, a slump of 25 percent from a year earlier.
