Volkswagen plans to finally show a production version of the Microbus-inspired ID Buzz electric van on March 9 — more than five years after unwrapping a concept at the 2017 Detroit auto show. It is expected to reveal pricing and open reservations this year.
But, Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh said, it will still be 18 months to two years before the ID Buzz will go on sale in the U.S. — it will be a bigger, longer vehicle than the one shown in March.
That's seven years from concept to showroom — longer than many models go between redesigns.
"This is probably the most anticipated, and most hyped, and most strung-out launch in the history of the automotive business," Keogh joked this month on a call with reporters, "and we string out launches."
But even with that timeline, Keogh said VW is expected to beat a rival sliding door-equipped, battery-electric minivan from Chrysler to market by at least a year, if not more.
