Karma plots new course with Kaveya EV

Karma Automotive, after years of introducing only wild concepts but nothing that ever made it to production, is changing course with a new lineup headlined by what the Southern California automaker describes as an electric super coupe.

The Karma Kaveya, which was introduced Saturday at the Concours at Wynn Las Vegas, is a low-slung car with sleek angles, butterfly doors and a range of 250-plus miles. The name Kaveya is inspired by a Hindi term meaning “poetry in motion.”

Karma says the Kaveya will be available in two variants: a rear-wheel-drive version with 536 hp or an all-wheel-drive model with more than 1,000 hp. The rwd Kaveya will be available in the fourth quarter of 2025, while the awd version will be available in the fourth quarter of 2026, the company said.

Pricing and where the Kaveya will be built was not disclosed.

"This is Karma's flagship, setting our corporate direction for the future," Marques McCammon, the company's president, said in a statement. McCammon joined the automaker in April.

McCammon wants Karma to be the embodiment of American success, design and engineering, and become the automotive [equivalent] of what Tiffany is to luxury goods.

Karma also teased another electric nameplate, the Gyesera. Karma says it will be a rwd sedan and should be available in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Karma's design team is now led by Michelle Christensen, a company vice president. Christensen was named an Automotive News Rising Star in 2015 and was responsible for the exterior styling of the Acura NSX supercar.

Karma Automotive dates to 2014, when Chinese auto parts maker Wanxiang Group acquired some of the assets of bankrupt Fisker Automotive.

Karma is also keeping the Revero plug-in hybrid sedan in the fold with an updated version that will have an electric range of 80 miles, the automaker said. The Revero, originally the Fisker Karma, will be available in the third quarter of 2024.
