Police say they foiled Fla. man's attack on Tesla event

A Florida man has been charged with threatening terrorism after allegedly planning to shoot up Tesla's Cybertruck delivery celebration. Police said he drove more than 1,100 miles to carry out the attack in Texas and was arrested a day before the Nov. 30 event after being located by traffic cameras and his cellphone signal.

A Tesla security officer reported finding threatening messages in an Instagram chat group Nov. 10, according to an affidavit obtained by the Austin-American Statesman. "I plan on killing people," one of the messages said, "and I would like you to do something about it so I don't have to. I wanna die."

The Travis County Sheriff's Office in Austin, Texas, where Tesla is headquartered, subpoenaed Instagram to find out that the account was owned by Paul Overeem, 28, of Orlando, the newspaper reported. They spotted his Chevrolet Tahoe on an Austin traffic camera that day and arrested him the next morning by tracking his phone.

Overeem has no known connections to Austin, police said. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
