Ferrari adds powerful Spider and coupe SF90 Stradale derivatives

FIORANO, Italy -- Ferrari has boosted the performance of its SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid mid-engine sports car in two "special series" limited production models, the SF90 XX Stradale coupe and SF90 XX Spider roadster.

The cars are aimed at wealthy customers looking for an extreme performance track car that can also be driven legally on the road.

The base price of the roadster, which has a retractable top, is 850,000 euros ($926,746) in Italy while the coupe starts at 770,000 euros.

Ferrari is adding “special series” derivatives to its lineup to boost earnings. The SF90 XX Stradale models are expected to generate 1.12 billion euros additional revenues for Ferrari between 2024 and 2026.

The most recent addition to the XX program was the FXX-K EVO coupe unveiled in 2017 and produced in a few dozen units.

Ferrari’s marketing boss, Enrico Galliera, said the SF90XX Stradale coupe and SF90XX Spider are “true high performance racing cars” that are road legal.

Ferrari gave the SF90 XX Stradale cars aerodynamic features, mostly from the FXXK-EVO coupe.

A rear fixed wing was added – the first to appear on a road-going Ferrari since the F50. This delivers 1,168 pounds of downforce at 250 kph (155 mph).

Ferrari said the focus of the SF90 XX Stradale’s development was to produce the company’s highest-performance road car to date, while retaining the functionalities of the SF90 Stradale’s hybrid powertrain.

For the two XX models, the output of the SF90 Stradale’s powertrain was increased to 1,016 hp (1,030 cv, PS) from 986 hp, with improvements to the turbocharged V-8 gasoline engine and to the three electric motors, Ferrari’s product boss, Gian Maria Fulgenzi, said at the cars’ unveiling at the automaker’s test track here.

Ferrari developed the XX program to offer a select group of expert customer drivers extreme cars that are not homologated for the road but can be driven at the very limit on the track.

The cooling flow management was redesigned and the engine compartment was modified to cope with the higher maximum power available. As a result, the maximum downforce is double that of the SF90 Stradale.

The improvements enable the SF90 XX Stradale to deliver the most efficient aerodynamic performance of any road-going car in Ferrari’s history, making it comparable only to the LaFerrari supercar, Ferrari said.

The SF90 XX Stradales have a boost feature giving additional power in short bursts. It produces extra power when the car is exiting a bend, improving the lap time 0.25 seconds at Ferrari's Fiorano track.

The SF90 XX's lithium ion batteries give them a 25-km range in fully-electric mode.

Ferrari will build 799 coupes and 599 roadsters. Galliera said both cars are already sold out.

Ferrari is launching 15 new models between 2023 and 2026 including the automakers's first fully-electric vehicle, expected in 2025.
