It's been a burning question in the ultraluxury world: Will Bugatti build an SUV?
Now we have the answer. President Stephan Winkelmann says it won't happen.
An SUV would not be consistent with the Volkswagen Group brand's profile and history, Winkelmann said in a statement.
Bugatti's ultraluxury sibling brands in VW Group have launched SUVs — Lamborghini with the Urus and Bentley with the Bentayga. Rival Ferrari is developing the Purosangue due in 2022, while Rolls-Royce is introducing the Cullinan.
Winkelmann said Bugatti plans to develop new models but added "there will be no SUV" irrespective of market trends.
His comments are noteworthy because Lamborghini introduced the Urus during his 11-year stint as CEO of the brand, which he left to run Audi Sport in March 2016. He has been in charge of Bugatti since January 2018.
