BMW bringing performance wagon to U.S.

BMW is bringing a wagon variant of its M5 sedan to the U.S.

The 2025 BMW M5 Touring will start at $122,675 including shipping and arrive late this year. The model debuted at Monterey Car Week in Carmel, Calif.

The third-generation M5 Touring features a drivetrain similar to that of the 640-hp M Hybrid V8 GTP race car, BMW said. The performance plug-in hybrid pairs a 4.4-liter high-revving twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with an electric motor integrated into the transmission.

The M5 Touring offers an estimated zero-emission driving range of up to 25 miles on a charge and sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds.

The wagon is intended to elevate BMW's performance subbrand in the U.S., which accounts for 40 percent of global M vehicle sales.

Sam Fiorani, vice president of global forecasting at AutoForecast Solutions, in April said that while wagons are not big sellers in the U.S., "they have a core following who will be waiting with cash in hand to pick up an M5 wagon as soon as it arrives."

The M5 Touring's athletic look hints at the performance under its hood. The wagon sports a newly designed BMW M kidney grille with the M5 badge on the horizontal double bar.

The center of the grille houses sensors for the driver-assistance systems, and the lower section features a pair of small air intakes. The central lower air intake is below the grille.

The M wagon has a stretched roofline, roof spoiler and prominent wheel arches. Slim rear lights extend into the sides, while vertical reflectors on the outer edges of the rear accentuate the width and powerful stance.

A two-section diffuser helps maximize aerodynamics and increase traction, BMW said. Quad exhaust tailpipes are integrated into the left and right of the rear apron.
