Chevrolet gives Tahoe, Suburban more tech, larger screens for 2025

Chevrolet is giving its highly profitable full-size SUVs more safety and technology features, including the large infotainment screen from the new electric Silverado pickup.

Chevy said the freshened 2025 Tahoe and Suburban will come with the 17.7-inch screen also featured on the high-end Silverado EV RST slated to arrive next spring. The freshened large SUVs, which will go into production late next year at General Motors' assembly plant in Arlington, Texas, will have restyled front fascias, new animated lighting and interior design updates.

Pricing was not disclosed.

"We like to say all roads to a full-size utility run through Tahoe and Suburban," Chevy CMO Steve Majoros told reporters. "When people see these products and check them out, we get more than our fair share."

The Tahoe and Suburban will continue to be sold in six trims — LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier and High Country — and carry the standard 5.3-liter V-8 engine on all but the top-end version. The 6.2-liter V-8 that comes on the High Country and is optional on the RST, Z71 and Premier also continues, offering 420 hp and 460 pound-feet of torque, vs. 355 hp and 383 pound-feet of torque for the 5.3-liter engine.

Diesel buyers will find a boost in an updated, optional 3-liter, inline-six turbo-diesel engine that offers 305 hp — 10 percent more than today — and improves torque more than 7 percent to 495 pound-feet. The updated diesel engine is available on the Z71 trim level for the first time.

Diesel purchases are about 6 to 10 percent of the total Tahoe and Suburban mix, Chevy said. Majoros said adding a diesel engine to the Z71 trim — which makes up about 20 percent of sales — opens up a potentially larger market.

Both the Tahoe and Suburban have a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Chevy said it gave the SUVs bolder exterior lighting and added animations to approach lighting and turn signals.

The RST and High Country also get 24-inch wheels for the first time, Chevy said. Two new exterior colors will be offered: Cypress Gray and Lakeshore Blue Metallic.

"The new faces of Tahoe and Suburban are more expressive, borrowing inspiration from the recently refreshed Chevrolet truck lineup," Phil Zak, executive design director for global Chevrolet, said in a statement.

Inside, Chevrolet said it wanted to bring technology found in other recent vehicles to the Tahoe and Suburban. First and foremost, Majoros said, is the bigger screen, an area that is "kind of a battleground now." The vehicles also get an 11-inch driver information screen. A number of safety features are newly standard, Chevy said, including rear pedestrian alert, side bicyclist alert and adaptive cruise control. The liftgate can automatically open when a key fob is detected behind the vehicle.

A new feature, Connected Cameras, allows owners to see multiple exterior and interior angles — including from a mobile app — and record crashes and thefts, Chevy said. The hardware will be standard on the RST, Z71, Premier and High Country, Chevy said, though a subscription to GM's OnStar safety and connectivity service will be required to use some features.

Super Cruise, GM's hands-free driver-assist technology, will be available for the LT, RST, Premier and High Country trims in 2025, after the initial production launch, Chevy said.

Chevy said it lowered the instrument panel to give the perception of more roominess in the front row and sought to make interior styling more sophisticated through colors, stitching, accents and materials. The High Country trim, for instance, gets wood decor for the first time.

The Tahoe will be able to haul as much as 8,400 pounds, while the Suburban will max out at 8,200 pounds, Chevrolet said. The brand has made some enhancements, including a tire health monitor that aims to avert blowouts and guidelines to help navigate a trailer's turning path.

The Tahoe has been the bestselling vehicle in the U.S. large SUV segment since 2001, according to the Automotive News Research & Data Center. The larger Suburban was fifth last year, with sales of 50,951 — behind the Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition and Dodge Durango. In 2023, Chevy has sold 84,093 Tahoes through September, while the Suburban notched sales of 42,676.

Together, the Chevy SUVs owned more than 35 percent of the segment in the first nine months of the year, according to the data center.

"We're not here to say, 'Oh, we're going to double the size of the segment with these two entries,' " Majoros said. "We're perfectly happy with the volume that we have and our commanding position within them."

Majoros said Chevrolet has the highest conquest rate in the segment, drawing more buyers from brands outside GM into a Tahoe or Suburban, and also has found success at keeping them once they've converted.

"When you've got that incredible sense of loyalty and conquest, people like the package, they like the footprint, they like what the vehicles do," he said. " 'Just give me a little bit more of what I'm thirsty for.' So what people are telling us is: 'Don't mess with the formula, don't mess with success, but give me some things that I'm looking for.' "

GM's Arlington plant, which makes the Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Cadillac Escalade, was among the factories where workers went on strike during the UAW's contract negotiations with the Detroit 3 this fall. In June, GM said it planned to invest more than $500 million at the Texas factory to build future full-size SUVs.
