Next-gen Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe gets electrified

The next generation of the GLC compact crossover's sporty variant arrives in the second half of 2023 with an electrified powertrain.

The redesigned 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe is powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor. The 48-volt mild-hybrid system includes a starter generator integrated into the transmission.

The GLC Coupe competes against premium crossovers including the BMW X4, Porsche Macan, Infiniti QX55 and Audi Q5 Sportback. Mercedes delivered 65,531 GLC crossovers in the U.S. last year, up 26 percent from 2021.

The engine makes 255 hp and propels the crossover from 0 to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. The electric motor system assists the combustion engine by adding up to 23 hp more.

A new four-link front suspension and a multilink independent rear suspension deliver improved ride comfort and handling, Mercedes said.

The sporty crossover is geared to explore.

In off-road mode, the GLC Coupe's central display offers a view under the front of the vehicle using the multiple onboard cameras. That is meant to help the driver detect obstacles such as large stones or deep potholes sooner. Also displayed are gradient and inclination information and the steering angle of the front wheels.

The GLC Coupe features a new underguard, roof rails painted in black and optional running boards. The headlights connect to the radiator grille, delivering a muscular look.

But the interior is all luxury.

A 12.3-inch instrument cluster and an 11.9-inch central display dominate the dashboard.

The standard AMG Line package includes Mercedes' latest MBUX infotainment system, heated seats and Burmester 3D surround system.

The optional MBUX Augmented Video for navigation superimposes house numbers and traffic lights on images from the front camera to make navigation more manageable.
