2023 Subaru Ascent gets new fascia, tech upgrades

Subaru's freshened 2023 Ascent three-row crossover will feature updated styling, improved driver assist technology and updated infotainment delivered on a tablet-style, 11.6-inch touch screen, when it begins arriving at U.S. dealerships this fall.

The midcycle update for the Japanese brand's largest crossover comes as Ascent sales are rising. Through May, Subaru had sold 25,328 Ascents in the U.S., up 9.3 percent from the same period a year ago, and despite continuing production constraints at its Indiana assembly plant because of ongoing supply issues.

With microchips in short supply, Subaru and other automakers are prioritizing output of their most popular and profitable vehicles.

For 2023, Subaru redesigned the Ascent's front fascia, giving it a more prominent grille, as well as adding new LED lighting in front and rear. Inside the cabin, Subaru upgraded the EyeSight driver assistance technology, giving the camera-based system a wider field of view and better range to detect bicyclists and pedestrians. The interior has a new Cabin Connect feature, making it easier for the driver to communicate with third-row passengers through the Ascent's optional Harman Kardon audio system.

The Ascent will come standard with a tablet-style 11.6-inch touch screen to operate its StarLink infotainment system. In addition, a new parking assistance feature offers a simulated 360-degree overhead view of the vehicle to allow the driver to avoid obstacles.

The 2023 Ascent will continue to be powered by a 260-hp, 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine, mated to a continuously variable transmission, and is capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds, Subaru said. Also new for 2023, the rear vision camera includes a washer to keep the view free of debris.
