Some engineering challenges are carrying over from internal combustion vehicles to electric cars and trucks.
Cutting weight, improving aerodynamic performance and reducing noise are perhaps the three biggest non-powertrain challenges that engineers have to deal with on the armada of EVs in the pipeline.
EVs might have far fewer moving parts, but they don't weigh less than ICE vehicles. In fact, many EVs weigh more because of their heavy battery packs. The electric GMC Hummer pickup, for instance, has an eye-popping curb weight of 9,046 pounds — roughly 3,200 pounds more than a 2021 Cadillac Escalade.
Lower aerodynamic drag, of course, helps vehicles use less energy, and with no noise or vibration from an engine, other sounds are amplified straight into the interior.
So, when a supplier develops a part that weighs about 40 percent less than a traditional component, cuts noise by as much as 5 decibels and can improve aerodynamic efficiency, you bet automakers are going to be interested.
