McCarley on changes to employment practices because of recent industry disruptions like the inventory crisis: “We have cross-trained many individuals to do multiple roles. ... We now have one person that can perform two or three different job types. We have increased wages across the board to compensate for cost-of-living increases, [help with] retention and [reward for] the multiple job roles in some cases.”
McCarley on improving employee retention: “We have a great culture at our store. We do cookouts weekly, off-site gatherings such as Topgolf. We have chili cook-offs and holiday events every year. We have a very tightknit group.”
McCarley on offering a long-term career path: “We always talk to our new hires about their long-term goals, where they see themselves in three to five years. And we always try to promote from within. We develop plans and paths for employees to advance and check in to monitor progress.”
McCarley on best practices to improve operations: “Cross-training is critical for us. Having people who are cross-trained in different roles mitigates any downtime or backlog. It limits frustrations and keeps the wheels turning.”
