Innovation: MirrorEye Camera Monitor System
First customer: Undisclosed commercial vehicle manufacturer
Stoneridge has given commercial drivers an enhanced level of situational awareness with its MirrorEye camera monitor. The system replaces traditional mirrors with five digital cameras that eliminate blind spots and make the driver more aware of traffic around the vehicle.
The system’s infrared color night vision display assists with vehicle operations in darkness. Its trailer panning feature tracks the back of the trailer through turns.
Data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration suggests that a MirrorEye-equipped vehicle will mitigate about 30 percent of potential accidents and up to half of direct accident costs.
By working with fleet customers to amass more than 5 million miles of validation and product refinement input, Stoneridge’s camera monitor system was granted an exemption from the administration, allowing the removal of mirrors from commercial vehicles.
