Ruben Arcila, 36
General sales manager, DCH Kay Honda
After spending his entire automotive career beneath the DCH Auto Group banner, Ruben Arcila took on a fix-it role when he became general sales manager at DCH Kay Honda in 2017.
“The store wasn’t performing as it should have,” Arcila said. “They did some managerial swaps across the country, and I thought, I could go there.”
Under his leadership, the Eatontown, N.J., dealership, named one of Automotive News’ Best Dealerships to Work For in 2018, improved across the board. Total vehicle sales increased 9.2 percent from 2017 to 2018, with 2,217 new vehicles and 1,691 used vehicles sold in 2018. Gross profit soared 57.6 percent.
Keeping employee retention high is one of Arcila’s main objectives.
“Compared to the previous regime, a lot of employees told me that the only reason they’re here is because I’m here,” Arcila said. “It means a lot to me, but the biggest thing is I like to see when people succeed.”
Arcila was born in Colombia and grew up in New Brunswick, N.J. These days, he spends the majority of his time at the dealership — and gives credit to his wife, Damaris, for holding down the fort at home with their two daughters.
While Arcila is widely known throughout his community, he’s all but absent online. He can be found on his dealership’s website, a polished LinkedIn page, and a 5-star DealerRater page — and nowhere else. Spending his time surfing the Internet just doesn’t pencil.
“I could be working or doing something to make money or generate income for myself and my family,” Arcila said. “Why would I spend two hours a day on Facebook?”
Even so, Arcila understands the power of social media. He pushes employees to encourage customers to post positive reviews. That is paying off with glowing online reviews, which draw customers from across the state. The store was the top-ranked Honda dealership in New Jersey in 2019 on DealerRater.com.
