WINNER: Alpha Puck
Velodyne
2019 - PACE Award Winner
What: Seeing farther at higher resolution for advanced safety
Innovation: Velodyne's VLS-128 high-performance lidar sensor joins a family of lidar sensors, and provides real-time 3D data up to 0.1-degree vertical and horizontal resolution, with a best-in-class 300-meter range and 360-degree surround view. The result, developed in conjunction with a completely automated new manufacturing process, is a longer range and higher resolution for autonomous driving and advanced vehicle safety at highway speeds.

Judge's Citation: Since the invention of 3D automotive light detection and ranging by Velodyne's founder and CEO, the company has refined its embedded software, detectors and application-specific integrated circuits for use by all major global automotive and mobility companies. Integrated object detection sensors have become the standard that accelerates autonomous vehicle development and commercialization. The Velodyne Alpha Puck, VLS-128, is the first 300-meter sensor for autonomous fleets and produces extremely dense 3D point clouds in 360-degree fields with best-in-class point density. Lidar has been a foundation of autonomous vehicle development, and mass production of Velodyne lidar stacks means that autonomous vehicles meeting SAE Level 4 autonomy requirements can be an affordable reality.
