WINNER: Thermoelectric Battery Thermal Management
2019 - PACE Award Winner
What: Battery heating, cooling through one device
Innovation: Gentherm has created a system to generate thermal balance in a battery, based on thermoelectrics, primarily for use in 48-volt mild-hybrid applications. Heating increases the performance at low temperatures, while cooling extends the lifetime of the battery significantly without power loss. The technology enables heating and cooling with a single device.
First Customer: Mercedes S class
Judge's Citation: Gentherm applied piezoelectric technology to become the industry's first supplier to offer a lightweight, low-cost solution for heating and cooling temperature sensitivity in automotive lithium ion batteries. Gentherm's battery thermal management system, launched on the 2019 Mercedes-Benz S 560, enabled Daimler to reduce the size of the battery while simultaneously improving its EV range and hybrid/EV performance, with accelerated battery charging. The flexibility of Gentherm's approach enabled Daimler to adapt it to a variety of programs across its lineup.
