What: Software simulation optimizes piston and piston ring
Innovation: To help develop more efficient and lower-emission engines, Federal-Mogul developed a software tool for customer use that predicts powertrain behavior with an accuracy level close to 95 percent. This enables engineers to optimize piston and piston ring performance, a major contributor to fuel economy and emissions. Nearly 60 automakers have used the software. The approach predicts piston and piston ring behavior in the early design stage of development and reduces prototype design and testing by 70 percent, enabling improved friction reduction, oil consumption and particulate matter control.

Judge's Citation: Federal-Mogul developed PRiME 3D, a dynamic simulation tool that accurately predicts performance of cylinder components with "right first time" accuracy. The software uses a pure physical approach in its advanced coding, combined with 3D modeling of components in real engine combustion conditions. This reduces calculation time from more than four days to less than two hours. The tool has been used in automotive and heavy-duty applications for diesel and gasoline engines. To accelerate customer interaction, a Web-based server solution was developed for rapid worldwide deployment. More than 90 percent of the supplier's customers' engine programs use PRiME 3D simulations. The high accuracy enables improved emissions and fuel economy while significantly reducing iterations of design, prototyping and testing.
