WINNER: Dual Volute Turbocharger for Gasoline Engines
2019 - PACE Award Winner
What: A dual volute turbo for I-4 pickup
Innovation: BorgWarner developed a dual volute turbocharger technology to overcome longtime obstacles in a gasoline engine for mass-produced pickup, using special software to appropriately size the system for an I-4 engine with optimal low-end torque behavior. The dual volute application achieves a 10 percent improvement in time-to-torque and improved fuel efficiency with imperceptible turbo lag.
First Customer: General Motors
Judge's Citation: Even though turbochargers for gasoline engines were invented nearly 115 years ago, dual volute turbochargers for gasoline engines have never been possible until now. BorgWarner set out more than six years ago to solve heat, stress, sound, material and durability problems inherent in the dual volute design before this breakthrough technology could make it to market. BorgWarner cleared those barriers to prove that this innovation would produce increased power, improved acceleration and lower emission, and give automakers the ability to offer smaller and lighter engine packages for all vehicles.
