Hot-stamped Laser-Welded door ring system
ArcelorMittal & Magna
2019 - PACE Award Finalist
What: Door-ring system improves strength, reduces weight
Innovation: The frame that holds a vehicle’s closed doors, known as the door ring, has been made stronger and lighter with reduced manufacturing complexity through the use of ultra-high-strength steel by ArcelorMittal and Magna International. The first combined application translated to weight savings of 30.8 pounds per vehicle, with extremely tight tolerances and precise forming. Reduced post-welding laser cutting allowed for increased manufacturing throughput.
